Junior PHP Developer

Remotely
Full-time

An established, fast-growing U.S. digital product studio seeks a curious graduate who enjoys turning business ideas into clean, tested code. You will join an agile backend team, pair with senior engineers, and release incremental improvements that our clients notice immediately.

What You’ll Do

- Write, refactor, and document PHP 8.x code with Laravel following PSR-12 standards.

- Design RESTful APIs and integrate relational databases—primarily MySQL—ensuring ACID compliance.

- Debug performance bottlenecks using Xdebug, New Relic, and query profiling; propose optimizations.

- Collaborate daily with frontend, UX, and QA teammates in Git-based pull-request workflows.

- Maintain and extend WordPress-powered microsites, develop custom plugins, and harden security.

- Author unit and feature tests in PHPUnit; assist in CI/CD pipeline maintenance (GitHub Actions).

- Contribute to sprint planning, backlog grooming, and retrospectives with concise updates.

- Produce clear technical notes—diagrams, READMEs, inline comments—that help future developers.

What You Bring

- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related U.S. program.

- 0-2 years of hands-on PHP experience (internships count).

- Working knowledge of Laravel, Composer, and MVC architecture.

- Solid SQL fundamentals—joins, indexes, normalization, transactions.

- Comfort with HTML5, modern CSS, and responsive design tweaks.

- Familiarity with Git branching strategies and code review etiquette.

- Analytical mindset; you isolate root causes, not just symptoms.

- Clear written and spoken English; you explain trade-offs to technical and non-technical peers.

Growth Path

First months focus on small bug fixes and unit tests. By month six, you will lead a minor feature from conception to deployment. Within twelve months, graduates of this program often progress to Mid-Level PHP Developer—owning services, mentoring interns, and influencing architecture decisions.

Our Environment

The team embraces asynchronous communication, meaning you can contribute effectively whether you sit in Boston, Boise, or your favorite coworking space. Expect stand-ups scheduled for overlap with Eastern Time, modern tooling (Slack, Jira, Notion), and a culture that values psychological safety as much as code quality.
